Phuket is one of the southern provinces of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are Phang Nga and Krabi, but because Phuket is an island there are no land boundaries. The island is served by Phuket International Airport, located in the northern area of the island. The airport is the main gate to the island for the travelers that come here to spend a tropical vacation.
Phuket is an excellent travel destination, it's the biggest island of Thailand and it's surrounded by Andaman Sea. The island is mostly mountainous and the mountains of Phuket form the southern end of Phuket mountain range. The highest mountain of the island is Mai Thao Sip Song, at 529 m above sea level.
Beaches & vacation resortThe island is mostly covered by forest. The western coast has several sandy beaches, while on the eastern coast the beaches are often muddy. Near the southernmost point of the island is located Laem Promthep, a popular sunset viewing point.
In the mountainous area from north is located Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary, protecting a large rain forest zone. The highest peaks of this reserve are Khao Prathiu (384 m), Khao Bang Pae (388 m) and Khao Phara (422 m). Sirinat National Park, settled on the northwestern coast, was established in 1981 and protects also a large area, including Nai Yang beach, where sea turtles lay their eggs.
Patong Beach
One of the most popular travel destinations on Phuket is Patong Beach, located on the western coast. Most of Phuket's nightlife and its cheap shopping is located in Patong. The beach is oval shaped and the coastline is filled with luxury hotels and restaurants. Patong Beach is famous worldwide for its nightlife, which is centered around two main areas - the Bangla Road and Paradise Complex. There are many restaurants, discos and bars to choose from.
Patong Beach is a public beach, so it's open to anyone. Many vacation facilities are available at Patong Beach. Travelers can hire here a boat to visit other beaches around the island, can practice water sports or can go shopping.
Other resorts
Other popular beaches of Phuket are located south of Patong. These include Karon beach, Kata beach, Kata Noi beach, Nai Harn beach and Bang Tao beach. These areas are generally much less developed than Patong and are visited by families and groups with preference for a more relaxed and less crowded environment than Patong.
