Phuket is one of the southern provinces of Thailand. The neighboring provinces are Phang Nga and Krabi, but because Phuket is an island there are no land boundaries. In the mountainous area in the northern end of Phuket is located Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary, protecting a large forested zone. The highest peaks of this reserve are Khao Prathiu (384 meters), Khao Bang Pae (388 meters) and Khao Phara (422 meters). Sirinat National Park, settled on the northwestern coast, was established in 1981 and protects also a large area, including Nai Yang Beach where sea turtles come to nest.

One of the most popular holiday places on Phuket is Patong Beach, located on the western coast. Most bars, clubs and shops are located there. The waterfront has a crescent shape and the beach is lined by hotels and restaurants. Besides great accommodations, Patong Beach is worldwide popular for the "wild" nightlife centered around two main areas - Bangla Road and Paradise Complex - where are located many restaurants and bars.

Patong Beach is public and therefore it is open to anyone, yet there are available many holiday amenities. Travelers can hire a boat and take tours to other beaches around Phuket, practice water sports or go shopping in the adjacent areas.

Other popular beaches in Phuket are located south to Patong and include Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, Nai Harn Beach and Bang Tao Beach. These areas are generally less developed than Patong, but this is the major reason why it are visited by families and groups that prefer a more relaxed holiday atmosphere.
