Holiday Guide to Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is one of the southern provinces of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are Phang Nga and Krabi, but because Phuket is an island there are no land boundaries. The island is served by the Phuket International Airport, located in the northern area, being the main gateway to this top holiday spot in Thailand.

Phuket is an excellent vacation destination because is the largest island in Thailand, lies in Andaman Sea and features some of the best beaches and hotels in Southeast Asia! It is mostly mountainous, the highest mountain being Mai Thao Sip Song with 529 meters.

Island of Phuket is mostly covered by forest. On the western coast are several sandy beaches, while on the eastern coast the shores are often muddy. Near the southernmost point of the island is located Laem Promthep, a very popular point from where can be admired fantastic sunsets!

In the mountainous area from north is located Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Sanctuary, protecting a large forested zone. The highest peaks of this reserve are Khao Prathiu (384 meters), Khao Bang Pae (388 meters) and Khao Phara (422 meters). Sirinat National Park, settled on the northwestern coast, was established in 1981 and protects also a large area, including Nai Yang Beach where sea turtles come to nest.

Tourist attractions in Patong Beach
One of the most popular holiday spots on Phuket is Patong Beach, located on the western coast. Most bars, clubs and cheap shopps are located there. The beach has a crescent shape and the coastline is lined by hotels and restaurants. Besides great accommodation units, Patong Beach is worldwide popular for the "wild" nightlife centered around two main areas - Bangla Road and Paradise Complex - where are located many restaurants and bars.
Patong Beach is public and therefore it's open to anyone, yet there are available many vacation amenities. Holiday makers can hire a boat and visit other beaches around the island, practice different water sports or go shopping in the adjacent areas.

Tourist attractions in other beach resorts
Other popular beaches in Phuket are located south to Patong and include Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, Nai Harn Beach and Bang Tao Beach. This areas are generally less developed than Patong and visited by families and groups which prefer a more relaxed holiday atmosphere.
